Elder Mills School, 1893
School Section No. 15
Elder’s Mills School (School Section No. 15), traces its beginnings to 1843, when a schoolhouse was built out of logs donated by parents. There was one entrance and students were originally separated by gender. The students sat facing the wall, and the younger students sat closer to the centre of the room, closer to the box stove. In 1872, a new school was built of brick. It had several upgrades, including two entrances, cloakrooms, a bell, the teacher’s room and eventually hydro. Pictured above is the school and its students in 1893.
