Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, ca. 1900s

In 1811, Jacob Keffer donated land on Concession 4, near Sherwood to the Lutheran Church. However, the congregation was in existence before this, with the first baptism records dating to 1808. In 1819, a church was constructed on the property, with services being held in the schoolhouse previously. The first minister was Revered John D. Peterson; however, it was difficult to get Lutheran preachers in the area and Adam Keffer, a prominent member of the congregation, walked to Pittsburgh twice (over 1000 kilometers!) to appeal to the Lutheran Synod to send them a minister, a call that was soon answered after his second petition. The photograph above is from ca. 1900 and in 1936, a memorial cairn to Adam Keffer was unveiled. The congregation remained independent until 1952 when it formally joined the Lutheran Synod of churches.
