Concord Methodist Church, ca. 1920

Until the union of the Methodist Churches in 1883, the Concord Methodist Church was commonly known as White Church or Bowes Church. The congregation originally gathered in a meeting house and then a log structure on the farm of William Bowes. It originally formed part of the Yonge Street Circuit, which was staffed by two ministers. The salary was $450-500 for a married minister and half that for a single individual. However, in the early days money was scarce, leading the preacher to receive part of his salary in food and other essentials. The brick building depicted above in around 1920, was built in 1886 and served the congregation until the 1930s.
