Maple United Church, ca. 1930s
Methodist services were originally held in 1833, in the barn of Obediah Rupert. As a result, Rupert’s Chapel, as the church was previously named, was opened in 1840. The chapel was located in Sherwood on the west end of Lot 16, Concession 3. In 1869, a decision was made to build a larger church. This church is pictured below in around 1930. The cornerstone was laid in 1870 and the following year, land was purchased for the cemetery. In 1883, the Maple Circuit of the Methodist Church was formed, and the Sunday school room was added. When the United Church of Canada came into being, following the union in 1925, this became the Maple United Church.
