Mennonite Church, Edgeley, 1908
The Mennonite Church in Edgeley is one of the oldest structures in Vaughan Township, dating from 1824. It was built by pioneers who emigrated to the area from Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The property was owned by John Smith, who also donated an acre of land for a cemetery. In 1848, it was covered by siding and the roof was shingled. Early families that are associated with the church included the Shunks, Sniders, Troyers, Hoovers, Burkholders, Wislers, Lehman and Schmidts. The photograph above is from 1908, and the following year the church was closed until 1915. From 1915-1923, monthly services were held and before the building was closed again. In 1963, it reopened, with services being held usually on an annual basis.
