Richmond Hill United Church, 1968
The Methodist congregation at Richmond Hill was organized in 1803 and shortly after this the Yonge Street Circuit was formed. The Yonge Street Circuit originally covered a large territory – East and West York Townships, Etobicoke, Markham, Vaughan, King, Whitchurch and the Gwillimburys. As a result of a population increase, new boundaries were soon necessary, and it became the North Yonge Street Circuit. This new circuit was comprised of Richmond Hill, Maple, Victoria Square, Bethel, Patterson and Headford. The first church building was constructed in 1860, though it later burned, leading to a new building being constructed nearby. In 1925, following the Union of Churches, the church became known as the Richmond Hill United Church. The photograph above depicts the church in 1968.
