Involvement of Japanese Canadians to Service

Despite facing discrimination on a daily basis, many Japanese Canadian men and women served in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces during the World Wars. More than 200 Japanese Canadians participated in the war effort, including at Vimy Ridge and Hill 70. However, after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, anti-Japanese sentiment flared, particularly along Canada’s west coast. Following the attack, Japanese Canadians were barred from service, and in 1942, approximately 20,000 people of Japanese descent were forcefully relocated within Canada under the provisions of the War Measures Act.
