Sergeant Russell Sheppard
This excerpt from “York County Men and Women Who Gave Their Lives in World War II, Book 3,” lists Paratrooper Sergeant Russell Sheppard as being killed in action on May 24, 1944 at age 20. He enlisted in May 1942 with the 48th Highlanders before being transferred to the First Special Service Force (FSSF). After undergoing rigorous training at Mount Helena in the United States, the unit saw first combat on the Japanese-occupied island of Kiska. Pictured above are Italian-Canadian members of the FSSF in Kiska, Alaska, many of whom joined from Vaughan.
