Thomas Simms

This excerpt from “York County Men and Women Who Gave Their Lives in World War II, Book 3,” lists Sapper (engineer) Thomas Simms as being a member of the No. 2 Construction Battalion in Gibraltar at the same time his brother, Sapper John Hukezalie Simms of York County, was reported missing in action on Aug. 19, 1942. Pictured above are engineers who were using the material left from the bombing of Albain Saint Nazaire to construct trenches. The No. 2 Construction Battalion was the first and only-all Black Battalion in Canadian history, and as a construction unit, it carried out essential tasks such as building roads and railways, defusing land mines, rescuing the wounded and digging trenches.
