Castator Family, Abey Family, 'Serpent'
Photograph of a man playing the Serpent. The Serpent was a musical instrument that was named for its shape. It was a long cone (7-8 feet long) that was bent into a curved shape and played by moving the lips against a mouthpiece. The Serpent was invented in approximately 1590 by Edme Gulliaume, a French priest and commonly used in churches, before organs became more affordable.
