Dec., 2018: York West District Women's Institute fonds
The York West District Women's Institute was formed in 1901, with founder Mrs. Eleanor Cruickshank serving as the first president. The organization served to provide oversight to the Women's Institutes in York West (Toronto, Etobicoke, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Weston Village, and York), and acted as a liaison with the Ontario Women's Institute. The Institute engaged in many philanthropic and charitable activities as part of its mandate to serve King, country and community, and slowly expanded its purview to preserve community culture through the compilation of Tweedsmuir histories. Ultimately disbanding in 1994, the York West District Women's Institute was largely involved in war efforts during the first and second world wars as well as with the Canadian Red Cross. Spanning the years 1901-1944, the fonds consists of 1.35m of textual records in the form of 44 volumes. Included in these records are minute books, cash books, financial statements, membership books, annual reports and records relating to the various branches overseen by the York West District.
