Dec., 2012: William J. Farrand Fonds, Farrand children, ca. 1860
The William J. Farrand fonds is one of our premier collections and is composed of mostly graphic material dating from the mid 1800s. It includes examples of the three earliest photographic processes - daguerreotypes, tintypes, and ambrotypes – as well as cartes-de-viste and cabinet card formats. Most photographs are formal posed studio portraits depicting members of the Farrand and Snider families. Pictured above is an early tintype of the Farrand children (ca. 1860). Tintypes contained a thin iron base, featured a reverse image, and were more durable than the daguerreotype or ambrotype.
