Jul., 2018: Vaughan Township Police Department fonds

The Vaughan Township Police Department fonds is one of the City’s more fragmented collections, consisting of 40cm of textual records spanning the years of 1937-1965. Formed in 1924, the Township Police Department assumed the role of policing from the previous County of York Constabulary force. The Township Police acted independently until 1957, when the administration of police and fire services were combined and overseen by a single individual serving as both Fire Chief and Chief Constable. This arrangement eventually proved impractical, resulting in the reinstitution of separate administrations for fire and police in 1965. The Township Police Department dissolved in 1971 when municipal policing functions were transferred to the Region of York. Records in this collection include, but are not limited to, correspondence, reports, public opinion surveys, By-Laws, financial documents, and some judicial records. Access to certain portions of this record group are restricted under the Freedom of Information Act.
