Jul., 2014: Vellore Women's Institute fonds

Established July 10th 1915, the Vellore Women's Institute was one of the many branches of the Federated Women's Institute of Ontario (FWIO), created within Vaughan to capture and preserve local community history as well as to promote female endeavours. Organized as a means for women to gather, discuss and work together to improve their standard of citizenship and homemaking, the Vellore branch fostered a sense of community, while working towards the growth and empowerment of all women. Like the other branches of the FWIO, the Vellore branch compiled Tweedsmuir Village Histories, which recorded the local history of the community as well as the branch itself. The Vellore branch differed from many other branches however, in that it chose to record the history of many local communities, rather than just Vellore itself. The fonds spans the years 1835-1994 and consists of minute books, financial statements, photographs, postcards, pamphlets, cemetery plot indexes and Vaughan newspapers.
