Oct., 2018: St. Stephen's Anglican Church fonds
The St. Stephen’s Anglican Church fonds is one of the archive’s older collections, consisting of materials dating as far back as the 1830s. Originally located on Langstaff Road (lot 10, concession 3), the first St. Stephen’s Anglican Church was constructed in 1838 and served the communities of Maple and Sherwood. Following an influx of population during the 1880s and 1890s, a new church was built in 1895, relocating the congregation to 10103 Keele Street. The church remains open and at this location today, despite a brief closure between 2008-2016 due to financial struggles and falling attendance. The fonds spans the years 1832-2002 (predominately from 1909-2002), and consists of textual records including vestry minutes and books, Women’s Auxiliary minutes, church accounts, correspondence, directories and newsletters, photographs, slides, drawings and various artifacts, including offering dishes and a communion visitation set.
