Aug., 2014: James and William Russell fonds

The James and William Russell Firm was a sibling owned and operated business, specializing in the breeding and sale of shorthorn cattle. While the business itself was located in Richmond Hill, William Russell was a resident of Vaughan Township, living in the hamlet of Carville. During its operation, the Russell’s firm was quite successful, with sales of cattle recorded as far afield as the Canadian and American West, earning the brothers a number of national and international cattle-breeding awards. Although the Russells primarily specialized in the breeding of cattle, documents within the fonds do suggest the brothers did briefly attempt to breed sheep. The fonds spans the years 1821-1922 and consists primarily of textual records. Comprehensive coverage of the Russell’s business dealings can be found within the fond in the form of property tax assessment certificates, photographs, financial records, fragments of flock and herd registers and diplomas.
