Dec., 2017: Keffer and Shunk Family

The Keffer and Shunk families were among the first settlers in Vaughan Township, originating from Brother’s Valley, Somerset County in Pennsylvania. Arriving in 1804, the Shunk Family purchased Lot 8, Concession 4 in Edgeley (north-east of Jane and Hwy. 7 today) and quickly began tilling the land. Two years later, siblings Jacob and Michael Keffer arrived with their families and settled on Lots, 9, 10 and 12 in Concession 3 (present day Keele and Hwy 7 area). Connected by marriage, the two families soon occupied several thousand acres in Vaughan and continued to farm well into the 1960s. Spanning the years 1784-1970, the Keffer and Shunk Family sous-fonds consists of textual records, photographs, tintypes, a collection of reading books and an antique cedar steamer trunk, passed down through the generations.
