Pierre Berton (1920-2004) was a noted Canadian author, television personality, journalist and long-time resident of Kleinburg. Recognized as an accomplished storyteller and writer, Berton was one of Canada’s most prolific authors, with his work focusing on popular culture, Canadian history, anthologies, children’s books, critiques and historical works for youth. Throughout his professional career, Berton worked as the managing editor for Macleans Magazine, was a key member of the CBC’s flagship program Close-Up, was a permanent panelist on the popular show Front Page Challenge and authored over 50 books. As the recipient of the Order of Canada, 3 Governor General’s Awards, the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour and numerous honourary awards, Berton continues to be regarded as a serious popularizer of Canadian History today. The Pierre Berton fonds spans the years 1812-2007 and consists of textual records (including correspondence, party lists, articles and first drafts), photographs, audio visual materials, awards, certificates, publicity posters and various other personal artifacts.
