Bradford’s Red and White Store/Cousin's Merchant, ca. 1930's
Built in 1886 by James E. Farr and Edwin Ramsay, the store sold groceries and dry goods as well as an assortment of farm equipment. In 1891 the business was sold to Franks and McBride, who renamed it “The People’s Store” and expanded their products to include glassware, earthenware, crockery, hats, caps, fur robes, ready-made clothing as well as roller flour and feed. In 1917, Fred Cousins and his nephew A. Bertram (Bert) Cousins bought the store; one year later Fred sold his share to his nephew who carried on the business until 1938. At that time the business joined the chain of Red and White stores, which was sponsored by National Grocers Ltd. in Toronto. The above photograph depicts Mr. and Mrs. B. Cousins.
