Hydro Services: Woodbridge Hydro Electric Commission, 1962

On July 16, 1914 the Village of Woodbridge signed its first agreement for hydro-electric power. Temporary hydro-electric service was made available in October 1914, on the night before the opening of the Woodbridge Fair. Permanent power became available on December 2, 1914. By 1918 power lines were extended east from Woodbridge into Vaughan Township and eventually into the hamlet of Maple. This development was known as the Vaughan Township system and was operated by the Woodbridge Hydro System until 1927, when the Woodbridge Rural Power District formally came into being. Eventually this area covered roughly 400 square miles and included parts of Vaughan, King, Toronto-Gore, Albion, Chingacousy, West Gwillambury and Tecumseth Townships. The above photograph shows hydro workers with one of the trucks used.
