Carte de Visite, Lachlan Beaton

This carte de visite is of Lachlan Beaton, executed by W. C. Cain of Owen Sound, from the McClure Family Fonds The carte de visite was patented in 1854 by French photographer André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri. These prints were the same size and had many of the same details as the existing calling cards, with the addition of a photograph. These images were typically quite little, often measuring 3.5 x 2.5 inches and taken using an earlier photographic method ie. albumen, before being distributed. The carte de visite became popular in the 1860’s as a way of creating cheap family portraits and sparked a collecting craze, known as cartomania. Many of the more valuable carte de visite displayed images of the royal family, as well as actors, musicians, writers and politicians and these photographs became a popular gift to celebrate birthdays and holidays. The carte de visite was later succeeded by the development of the larger cabinet card, but they remain a collector’s item today.
