Stan Sellen, Barn and Field
Image of a barn and a field painted by Stan Sellen. Stan Sellen was born the child of British immigrants. He graduated from Danforth Tech High School and enlisted in the army, but did not finish training in time to serve in World War II. Sellen was educated at the Ontario College of Art and the Phoenix School of Design in New York. He joined CBC in 1953 as a set designer and later art director. Using the method of en plein air or painting in the open air, Sellen began painting in the late 1940s, then spent the 1960s-1980s travelling Vaughan and capturing the landscape. In doing so, he illustrated the town’s evolution from an agrarian pioneer settlement to a city. Stan began with oils, later transitioning to watercolours and pen and ink sketches. Sellen’s work is noted for vibrant colours, as well as the incorporation of natural light. Stan and his family once lived in the Carrville Post Office and were involved in the restoration efforts of the Post Office building from 2009-2013. Although he retired in the 2000s, his work continues to be exhibited throughout Ontario.
