Patterson & Bro. Manufacturers Catalogue

Patterson and Bro. Manufacturers was established approximately two km east of Maple in 1851 as an enterprise specializing in the manufacture of farm equipment by brothers Peter and Alfred Patterson. It was a modern plant and its foundry, blacksmith shop, machine shop, storage warehouse, lumberyard, and office building were the cornerstone of a tightly-knit community of workers and their supervisors who lived in the "company town" of Patterson. Small but comfortable houses were built for the workers by the Pattersons with as many as 300 people living in Patterson by 1883. A school, post office, and church were also erected for the employees' convenience. Stage service to nearby villages was also available. Wages were exceptional at the Patterson plant, being based on the day's labour rather than piecework. Employees of Patterson and Brother earned an average $39 per month, a considerable sum for the time. The various facilities of the plant were "... spacious, clean and well-ventilated". The firm relocated to Woodstock in 1891 as a direct result of its inability to secure a rail line spur for the plant. Shortly after moving to Woodstock, it was bought out by Massey-Harris.
