Smith Family

John Smith came to Vaughan from Pennsylvania in 1799. In 1801, he settled on Lot 7, Concession 4 (near present day Keele Street and Centre Street) and his brother-in-law, Jacob, joined him shortly after. The family homestead passed through Jacob’s family, until it was sold to the Canadian National Railway in 1966, after 165 years of family ownership. As the Smith family expanded, other farms were purchased by the family, and the Smith name became associated with the village of Edgeley. Pictured above are two Smith cousins: Carson and Frank. Carson was a butcher for the local beef rings and active in the Edgeley Farmers Club, while Frank built barns.
