Stegmann Family

The Stegmann Family descended from John Stegmann, a Hessian mercenary who served the British Crown. John Stegmann held the rank of captain during the American Revolution and became the Deputy Surveyor General of Upper Canada in 1790. The family inherited from the above several thousand acres in Vaughan Township in the Pine Grove and Kleinburg areas, with George, John's youngest and only surviving son, owning several grist mills and becoming Vaughan's first postmaster in 1846. Pictured above are an article of agreement concerning the Stegmann Family holdings and George Stegmann’s bible from 1834.
