Cover (Cober) Family
Nicholas Cover (Cober) and his wife, Eve Fisher, emigrated to Canada in 1796, travelling by horseback from the United States. Shortly after settling in Vaughan they adopted surname convention Cober. An inscription on their tombstone in the Cober Burying Ground, a pioneer cemetery, notes "of the first settlers on Yonge Street they were the fifth family.” They settled on Lot 34, Concession 1 (near present day Bathurst Street and Highway 7), near Thornhill, receiving a Crown Deed for this property (pictured above).
