High Bee Activity at the Apiary
The girls got a break yesterday because we finally got a little rain. Saturday was like a ghost town in the late afternoon(there was absolutely no bees to be seen) because they sensed the rain was coming. It was nice to see they got a nice break from working. The summer has been very hot which stresses the bees and shortens their lives. Today(the day after the rain) the girls are out in full force and it is the highest activity I have seen all year long! About 15 - 20 feet from the colony you can start to hear a low frequency buzz of the bees and it just got more intense the closer you got the the hive!
The white screen at the entrance is called a "robber screen". The scent of honey is strong this time of year and other bees and wasps will go and rob the hive if this wasn't in place. The bees that belong to the colony have learned they now have to go in and out of the hive by going up to the top.(There are two slots on the far left and far right to gain access to the hive). The "Robbers" smell the honey and try to gain access to hive where the traditional entrance is and can't figure out how to get into the hive. If robber bees or wasps get into the hive, they can wipe out the whole colony.
