The eyes of Argus
Named after a complex web of Greek myths, the European Peacock or Inachis io, daughter of Inachus the river god, symbolically carries the eyes of Argus on her wings, reflecting how she was watched by Argus, the giant with 100 eyes, so as to keep her separated from Zeus, the god of sky and thunder, who had fallen in love with her.
It was Hera, the goddess of women, and wife of Zeus, who sent Argus to watch Io and prevent Zeus from visiting her. In some myths Hera is said to have used Argus’ eyes to decorate her peacock’s feathers as a way of thanking the giant for his help.
What weighty symbolism on the wings of such a delicate creature!
