Water Striders with Shadows

Have you ever watched water striders (sometimes called water spiders) on the surface of the water? In this photo, the dark, oval spots are the shadows caused by the striders (which can be seen on the surface if you look closely). The question is....what exactly is causing the "shadows?" It is not the bug itself. Apparently it is the compressed water surface?
