"BUITRES DEL MUNDO .. !! Vulture is the name given to two groups of birds evolved convergently: the vultures of the New World, among them the known Andean condor; and the vultures of the Old World, including the birds that are seen poking at the corpses of dead animals in the African plains. The vultures of the world are found in North America and South America, and the old world vultures are found in Europe, Africa and Asia, which means that between the two groups, vultures are found on all continents except Australia and Antarctica. A particular feature of many vultures is their bald head, devoid of normal feathers. This helps them keep their heads clean when they are introduced into the bodies they feed on. Research has shown that bare skin can play an important role in thermoregulation.

THE CLASSIFICATION : The vultures are classified into two groups: the vultures of the old world and the vultures of the new world. The similarities between the two different groups are due to convergent evolution.

The vultures and condors of the new world are found in warm and temperate zones of the Americas and are not closely related to the Accipitridaes (old world vultures), they belong to the Cathartidae family, which was once thought to be related to storks. However, recent DNA tests suggest that they should be included among the Accipitriformes, along with other birds of prey. However, they are not closely related to the other vultures, and their similarities are due to convergent evolution. Several species have a good sense of smell, unusual for raptors, and are able to smell dead animals from great heights, up to a kilometer away. There are 7 species of new world vultures: American black vulture, Coragyps atratus, in South America and northern USA. Aura gallipavo, Cathartes aura, in the Americas to the south of Canada. Aura sabanera, Cathartes burrovianus, in South America and northern Mexico. Aura jungle, Cathartes melambrotus, in the Amazon basin of tropical South America. California Condor, Gymnogyps californianus, in California. Formerly widespread in the mountains of western North America. Andean Condor, Vultur gryphus, in the Andes. Zopilote rey, Sarcoramphus papa, from southern Mexico to northern Argentina." (Taken from Educarapaz) Traducción google
