According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of emergency department visits for self-inflicted injury was 836,000 in 2011. Most people who engage in self-injury begin during their teens. However, statistics on self-harm are hard to come by, as most cases remain undiscovered. It is clearly a disturbing phenomenon which is affecting teenagers in developed countries.
