Poster Project Benny
In the poster project, we were supposed to photograph a societal issue that was occurring in modern day. Some examples other people chose are littering and health, however, I decided to choose modes of transportation. There a plethora of transportation systems in our society including walking, car, bus, and many more. Transportation is a vital issue because people are restricted to certain methods of transportation due to money issues and are forced to use the available systems provided by the city. Moreover, in today’s society, technology has been increasing greatly, resulting in apps such as uber revolutionizing people who do not own cars. We had to take 1 main picture that basically summed up the rest of our 14 individual pictures. Then, we had to place the pictures on a poster with the use of photoshop and create a stroke for each photo.
First of all, for my main picture in the poster project, I took a picture of a tire. Tires basically make up most forms of transportation and I chose this as my main photo because it summed up the rest of my modes of transportation. Skateboards, bikes, taxis, cars, segways, scooters, buses, motorcycles, trolleys, and dirt bikes all use a form of a wheel/tire. The tire actually originated in 1845 and since then, the tire has influenced almost all forms of transportation. Thus, the tire is the most significant picture within my poster project.
Secondly, I photographed the interior of a public bus. The many public buses around a community provide transportation to the poorer side of a society who do not own a mode of transportation. Also, kids can use the bus to hang out with friends, travel places, or even go to school. Most of the time, the bus is free and provides an access to transportation in a little wait.
Next, I captured an uber car on the road. Uber has grown significantly throughout time due to the increase in technology. For myself, uber is more efficient and accurate because the uber car actually comes to your exact location unlike a public bus. Kids who are unable to drive, value uber as an essential system to their outside social life. Many kids have parents who are constantly working or aren’t home and are therefore, unable to drive their kids anywhere. Also, Uber contains all the driver’s information so it is safe, as well as having a panic button in case any suspicious activity occurs throughout the duration of the ride. Parents can also monitor the uber to ensure their customer is driven to the correct location. In my picture, I used shallow depth of field to focus on the uber symbol on the car and overall, I was pleased with the picture.
Moving on, I took a picture of a skateboard on the road lines, which is an example of a leading line that I previously learned about. Skateboarding provides an escape route to me, connects friends together, and provides a fun transportation system. I see tons of kids riding their skateboard to and from school as their mode of transportation. However, for some kids who live far from school, skateboarding won’t work out and they will have to utilize one of many other types of transportation.
Furthermore, I went to Venice and took a couple pictures of some other forms of transportation. One of the pictures I took was of a teal bike with the depicted beach background in the back. Bikes enable fast, relaxful times to get from one spot to another. People can ride their bike on the concrete roads by the beach and basically ride them anywhere that is a decent distance away. As I said before, many kids have their own forms of transportation and a bike can also aid a kid to get to school when no other transportation is provided.
Next, probably the most used mode of transportation, the car. I took a picture of my dad's Hummer. Basically every adult and most teenagers who are old enough to drive have a car. The places cars can take one is limitless. People take cars on road trips, to events, school, and even to a local store. Although cars can be expensive to some, cars provide access to countless places that other forms of transportation may not offer.
Continuing, a dirtbike can also be a form of transportation. Since I live in Bell Canyon, there are numerous trails around the neighborhood that end up in certain places. Although you aren’t supposed to ride dirt bikes, many people still ride them to meet up with friends or go to a store. I took a picture of my friend Kasra doing a wheelie on his dirtbikes in his front yard. Dirtbikes aren’t the most valuable form of transportation to most people, but it still is to some.
To travel far distances, planes are used. I took a picture of the LAX airport, which is the airport of Los Angeles. Personally, I extremely enjoyed how this picture turned out because of the bold LAX symbol accustomed with the background and perfect arrangement of colors. I’ve traveled to Boston, Vegas, and even Japan in a plane. Although plane tickets can be really expensive, this efficient form of transportation saves time and enables people to travel around the world.
My next picture is of two jetskiers in the ocean and one of them is doing a jump. I was pleased with this picture due to appearance that the jet skier was floating over the water. Jet skis can also be a transportation tool for people who live on the beach and try to travel to the Santa Monica Pier for example. Although many people don’t have jet skis, the percentage of surfers, and beach house owners may use them to travel distances across the water.
In Long Beach, I took a picture of the trolley. The trolley enables easy access to many tourist attractions and revolutionizes walking. I liked how the colors of the photo turned out with the red trolley and the clear blue sky. The trolley is free and transfers people from place to place to enjoy events and take pictures.
Similar to the jet skis, I captured canoes/boats resting on the shore and I consider this my best picture I’ve ever took in this photography class. Thus, I’m using this picture for my second semester final, as well as this project. The serene setting portrayed in the photo is my favorite aspect, as well as the reflection that the clouds give off to the water. Boats can also be used as transportation to beach houses or boat owners.
Moreover, I took a picture of motorcycles parked in a parking lot. Motorcycles enable efficient travel on freeways because they can squeeze between cars in traffic. Motorcycles unite people together and there are many motorcycle “gangs” who enjoy driving around the area from place to place.
One of the easiest ways of reaching Point A to Point B is to just simply walk. While in Venice, I took a picture of a crowd of people walking through all the shops and the beach. The picture had palm trees in the distance and gave off a beach setting with surfers who were exploring the shops. Walking is one of the most common ways to get from class to class, a friend’s house, etc.
I then took a picture of segways lined up across a bench. Many cops use segways as a transportation system across malls, events, etc. Also, tourists rent segways to visit historical places to capture pictures. A segway can travel about 15 mph and is more efficient and fun than just walking. A popular movie, “Mall Cop” depicts Paul Blart as he tries to save a mall and he uses a segway to travel from place to place.
Taxis are not so often used around our neighborhood, but are seen at airports such as the airport. After traveling all day, people wave down taxis to take them to a hotel, or back to their own car. Taxis have been around for a while, but as I said before, with the increase of technology, apps such as uber and lyft have surpassed them.
All in all, in the poster project we had to take 15 pictures of a societal issue that occurs in modern day. I decided to shoot modes of transportation because of the vast forms that transportation can reside in. Some forms include cars, buses, skateboard, and many more that enable people to travel from Point A to Point B.
