Creully Castle
Creully Castle dates back to the 11th century. Around 1360, during the Hundred Years' War, it was converted into a fortress. The castle was occupied alternately by English and French troops. After the end of the war, the castle returned to the hands of Baron de Creully. On the orders of Louis XI, it was demolished in 1461, but rebuilt ten years later. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle underwent extensive renovation.
Twenty-two barons from the same family inherited the castle between 1035 and 1682. In 1682, the last Baron de Creully sold the castle because he was heavily in debt. The new owner was Jean-Baptiste Colbert, a minister of King Louis XIV. Colbert's descendants lived in the castle until the French Revolution in 1789, when it was confiscated and sold to various wealthy landowners.
From 7 June 1944, the day after D-Day, until 21 July 1944, the BBC set up a radio studio in the castle tower so that war correspondents could broadcast their reports on the Battle of Normandy.
The town of Creully-sur-Seulles currently owns the castle.
