d'Aertrycke Castle
In 1860, August de Maere bought an estate on which he built the current neo-Gothic castle between 1869 and 1871. August de Maere was elevated to the nobility in 1876 and given permission to add d'Aertrycke to his name.
During WWI, German troops bivouacked in and around the castle. After their departure in November 1918, a looted castle remained. In 1920, the castle was sold to the American Red Cross who turned it into a rehabilitation centre for war wounded. In 1921, Achille Lemahieu became the owner of the castle. The de Maere family was able to buy the castle back in 1928.
During WWII, it passed successively into the hands of Belgian, German and Canadian troops. In 1944, the castle escaped complete destruction. Only the rear facade was badly damaged.
The domain remained the country house of the de Maere d'Aertrycke family until, in 1991, contact was made with the West Flanders provincial government to give the domain a public purpose.
The castle was transformed into a luxury hotel-restaurant and conference centre.

In 1860 kocht August de Maere een domein waarop hij tussen 1869 en 1871 het huidige neogotische kasteel liet bouwen. August de Maere werd in 1876 tot de adel verheven en kreeg hij de toestemming om d’Aertrycke aan zijn naam toe te voegen.
Tijdens WOI bivakkeerden de Duitse troepen in en om het kasteel. Na hun vertrek in november 1918, bleef er een geplunderd kasteel over. In 1920 werd het kasteel verkocht aan het Amerikaanse Rode Kruis die er een revalidatiecentrum voor oorlogsgewonden van maakten. In 1921 werd Achille Lemahieu eigenaar van het kasteel. De familie de Maere kon het kasteel in 1928 terug aankopen.
Tijdens WOII kwam het achtereenvolgens in handen van Belgische, Duitse en Canadese troepen. In 1944 ontsnapte het kasteel aan een volledige verwoesting. Enkel de achtergevel werd zwaar beschadigd.
Het domein bleef het buitenverblijf van de familie de Maere d’Aertrycke tot in 1991 er een contact kwam met het West-Vlaams provinciebestuur om het domein een publieke bestemming te geven.
Het kasteel werd omgevormd tot luxehotel-restaurant en congrescentrum.
