Groenenberg Castle
Around 1890, Groenenberg Castle, as a country house, was commissioned by the Brussels notary Charles Claes. Already around 1900, it was thoroughly renovated and the castle acquired its current appearance.
During World War II, the castle was occupied by high-ranking German officers. After liberation, a lot of damage was done by British and American troops.
Handling the war damage file took so long that the owners never moved back into the castle, which had become uninhabitable. The building deteriorated into a ruin and the surrounding estate went wild.
In 1981, the Flemish government bought the castle, which thoroughly restored it in 1990 and opened the 45-hectare estate to the public as a park.

Omstreeks 1890 werd kasteel Groenenberg, als buitenverblijf, gebouwd in opdracht van de Brusselse notaris Charles Claes. Rond 1900 al werd het grondig verbouwd en kreeg het kasteel het huidig uitzicht.
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het kasteel bezet door hoge Duitse officieren. Na de bevrijding werd er veel schade aangericht door Britse en Amerikaanse troepen.
De afhandeling van het oorlogsschadedossier duurde zo lang dat de eigenaars het onbewoonbare geworden kasteel nooit meer betrokken. Het gebouw verviel tot een ruïne en het omringende domein verwilderde.
In 1981 kocht de Vlaamse overheid het kasteel op, die het in 1990 grondig restaureerde en het domein van 45 hectaren voor het publiek openstelde als park.
