Montenshof Castle
Montenshof Castle is named after the family that has owned it since 1812. However, the origins of the castle go back to the Middle Ages.
At that time, the castle consisted of a 17th-century extension to a smaller walled mansion from the 16th century or earlier. Although the building was wide-walled and accessible via a fixed bridge connected to a drawbridge, the castle never served as a defensive fortress.
Like most noble goods, this property was severely damaged during the French Revolution.
In 1812, the Montens family acquired the castle. This family originated from Dutch Brabant and was first mentioned in the 14th century. The family is related to the Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde family by marriage. It was with William the Silent that the family came to Antwerp. The Montens family restored the castle during the first quarter of the 19th century but used it, entirely according to noble custom, as a country residence.
During the Second World War, the castle housed the village schools. The parish priest also lived in the castle at that time.
At least until the time of its protection (1993) the property remained in the hands of the Montens family, although their land ownership diminished due to the construction of the Albert Canal and the motorway.

Kasteel Montenshof is genoemd naar de familie die het goed sinds 1812 bezit. Toch gaat de oorsprong van het kasteel terug tot de middeleeuwen.
Het kasteel zou toen bestaan hebben uit een 17de-eeuws aanbouwsel als uitbreiding van een kleiner omwald herenhuis uit de 16de eeuw of vroeger. Alhoewel het gebouw breed omwald was en toegankelijk via een vaste brug aansluitend op een ophaalbrug, heeft het kasteel nooit als verdedigingsplaats gediend.
Zoals de meeste adellijke goederen werd ook dit eigendom tijdens de Franse Revolutie zwaar beschadigd.
In 1812 verscheen de familie Montens ten tonele. Deze familie is afkomstig uit Nederlands Brabant en werd voor het eerst vermeld in de 14de eeuw. Door huwelijk is de familie met het geslacht Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde verwant. Het is met Willem de Zwijger dat de familie naar Antwerpen kwam. De familie Montens herstelde het kasteel tijdens het eerste kwart van de 19de eeuw maar gebruikte het, geheel volgens de adellijke gewoonte, als buitenverblijf.
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog waren de dorpsscholen in het kasteel ondergebracht. Ook de pastoor woonde in die periode in het kasteel.
Minstens tot op het moment van de bescherming (1993) bleef het goed in handen van de familie Montens, al verminderde hun grondeigendom ten gevolge van de aanleg van het Albertkanaal en de autosnelweg.
