Before the present castle was built in 1636, there was already a fortified house called the Caestertburg. After a fire in the middle of the 17th century, the castle was rebuilt.
The original builder was Arnold de Lamargelle. The castle remained in his family for a long time, but was inherited from a count Van Hoensbroek and then came into the hands of Hubert de Geloes, who was, among other things, president of the States of Liège and the county of Loon. A grandson of this Hubert had his wife's family coat of arms and himself placed above the current entrance in the eastern tower, so that descendants could know who lived here. The last female descendant of the De Geloes family married the Belgian count Marcel de Liedekerke in 1901. Their descendants still live in the castle.
The architectural style, Maasland Renaissance style, is typical for this region in the triangle Liège-Maastricht-Aachen. Characteristic is the combined use of red brick, bluestone and marl.
