Food for literary thought

ON HER first job, waitress Jessie Wyatt literally dropped a hot potato into a man's lap at a dinner at The Albert Hotel, Colchester.

"I just walked right on and never looked back," she re called.

But that's one anecdote that hasn't yet found its way into letters to magazines or short stories she writes at her home in Maldon Road. Thirteen years as a waitress at the Red Lion Hotel, Colchester, and recently two long holidays spent in America with her married daughter have given her, plenty of fuel for the literary soul that lurks beneath the prim black dress and white aproned figure which is a familiar sight at every big lunch and dinner in town.spent America with her married daughter have given her, plenty of fuel for the literary soul that lurks beneath the prim black dress and white aproned figure which is a familiar sight at every big lunch and dinner in town.

A mother of seven and grandmother of nine, the produce of her predominantly artistic family fill her home, with two ex-painter and decorator sons, an artist daughter at Alresford and an "art and craft" daughter in America, there is a heavy emphasis on attractive furnishings.

Especially since she took up artex embroidery on her first trip to the States at Christmas, for holiday. a six-week

Just back after another nine-week stay there with her 17-year-old son Clive, she talked proudly of her "American" daughter's cera mics, many of which were in pride of place on the side board.

And of her chance meeting with the nephew of her noto rious namesake Jesse James. "He just walked into my daughter's craft shop and I remarked on his name being the same as mine, and he said THE Jesse James was his uncle," she remembered, "I was quite thrilled because I'm a keen western fan."

Her daughter may soon be coming back to England and Jessie has hopefully written a story called "The Day Jan Came Home." She says she likes writing about her experience as a waitress too hence "Afternoon tea" about
