Il mausoleo si trova nella città di Samarcanda nell'attuale Uzbekistan. Occupa un posto fondamentale nella storia della architettura islamica e in particolare per lo stile azero dell'architettura, inoltre fu precursore e modello per le posteriori grandi tombe dell'architettura Moghul, tra cui la tomba di Humayun a Delhi ed il Taj Mahal ad Agra.
Il complesso contiene le tombe di Tamerlano, dei suoi figli Shah Rukh e Miran Shah e dei nipoti Ulug Beg e Muhammad Sultan. Viene onorato anche Mir Sayyid Baraka, maestro di Tamerlano.

The mausoleum is located in the city of Samarkand in present-day Uzbekistan. It occupies a fundamental place in the history of Islamic architecture and in particular for the Azerbaijani style of architecture, it was also a precursor and model for the later great tombs of Mughal architecture, including Humayun's tomb in Delhi and the Taj Mahal in Agra.
The complex contains the tombs of Tamerlane, his sons Shah Rukh and Miran Shah and his grandsons Ulug Beg and Muhammad Sultan. Mir Sayyid Baraka, Tamerlane's teacher, is also honored.
