La farfalla macaone si trova principalmente in Europa e in Asia, dove le popolazioni sono però sempre più ridotte, e occasionalmente si incontra in Canada, Alaska e California.
Nelle regioni temperate è presente in una grande varietà di habitat e a ogni altitudine, dalle pianure erbose fino alle cime delle montagne oltre i 3.000 m. Alcuni esemplari, inoltre, sono stati osservati nelle aree artiche e subartiche.
Ciò che maggiormente colpisce di questa grande farfalla, la cui apertura alare raggiunge i 10 cm, è l'incredibile colorazione delle ali: il lato superiore è giallognolo con nervature e bande trasversali nere, mentre quello posteriore è impreziosito da macchie rosse e blu. Le femmine sono più grandi dei maschi.
