Si tratta di un affresco decisamente particolare, risalente al periodo tra il 1265 ed 1335, Questo affresco tutt'oggi fa molto discutere, varie sono le interpretazioni, noi ne riportiamo due.
Secondo la prima l'affresco è un simbolo di fertilità. Doveva avere una funzione “apotropaica”, ovvero di buon augurio per i raccolti affinché fossero sempre abbondanti. Allo stesso tempo tuttavia doveva scansare la malaugurata possibilità di ricorrere alle scorte del magazzino, e quindi gli organi maschili a simbolo di fertilità e abbondanza ed i corvi neri ad insidiare i preziosi frutti; nel mentre figure femminili tentano di cogliere i "frutti" e si accapigliano per strapparli una all'altra.
Invece secondo l'esperto di arte toscana medievale George Ferzoco, l'affresco rappresenterebbe il primo "manifesto politico" della storia. Risulterebbe essere un messaggio dei guelfi sostenitori del Papa, contro i ghibellini sostenitori dell'imperatore. I Guelfi avvertivano i frequentatori della fonte, che nel caso in cui i Ghibellini fossero tornati al potere, questi ultimi avrebbero diffuso idee eretiche, stregoneria e perversioni sessuali
This is a very special fresco dating from 1265 to 1335. This fresco is still very much discussed, there are various interpretations, we include two.
