Nasce a Lhasa in Tibet. Entra bambino nel Monastero Ghelugpa di Tsecholing a Lhasa, dove viveva un suo fratello più vecchio. Compito specifico del Gompa era quello della celebrazione quotidiana dei rituali al Palazzo del Potala, sia per il Dalai Lama che per il Governo Tibetano. Lì Lama Monlam riceve la formazione di ‘maestro di cerimonia’. Era a Lhasa quando l’invasore cinese bombardava il Potala.
Vi rimane per qualche anno travestito da laico poi si rifugia prima in India a Dharamsala e poi in Nepal a Boudhanath. Decide allora di dedicarsi alla meditazione seguendo i consigli del suo maestro, spostandosi nei luoghi sacri nepalesi.
