A traditional street with prosperous merchant houses (2)

A sign in the photo indicates that the crown prince (now emperor) of Japan previously visited this site.

The houses were built in late Edo period when shoguns ruled and in early Meiji era when Japan modernized. At both sides, many houses have fireproof walls called udatsu, which extends above roofline and is decorated with roof tiles. At Udatsu Preservation District, Mino City, Gifu, Japan
