Red and bell-shaped cherry blossoms of Cerasus campanulata (Explored on March 11, 2024)
The Cerasus campanulata (Kanhizakura in Japanese) is a species of cherry found in a part of Southern and Eastern Asia such as Taiwan and Southern China. At Higashiyama Botanical Garden, Nagoya, Japan
Spontaneous hybridization between Cerasus campanulata and a different species of a cherry blossom tree (Cerasus speciosa) is considered to be the origin of the Kawazu cherry blossom tree, which was found around 1955 along Kawazu River, Izu, Japan as a wild-growing tree. Because of beautiful pink color as shown in the next photo and earlier blooming dates, Kawazu cherry blossoms become popular and now can be seen in many places in Japan.
