Papilio machaon is one of the largest and most conspicuous butterflies in Germany. It belongs to the family Papilionidae and has a wingspan of 50 - 75 mm. The species occurs in many parts of the northern hemisphere. There are 2 generations per year, the first flying from April through June and the second from July - through August/September.
