Hillsdale Inn Tower - San Mateo, Calif.

When I was a little girl, I dreamed that I would spend my wedding night at the Hillsdale Inn in San Mateo. We would book the 60 ft. high Honeymoon Tower room, with 360 degree views of the SF Bay Area. Sadly, this magical mid-century penthouse suite closed in the 1970s for repairs, never again to reopen... forever crushing a little girl's dreams. But, along comes eBay, with an overpriced postcard... tapping into fond memories... You got me again eBay, damn you! "Hello young lovers, whoever you are... we have a stairway to the stars, at the Hillsdale Inn, just for you! A penthouse way up in the sky..." I bet I paid more for this card than the price of the room in the 1960s. What's left of the Hillsdale Inn can be viewed at 477 East Hillsdale Blvd. in San Mateo. The architect of the motel was Irving Caster. Not sure if he designed the tower too. Motel went up in 1962.
