Stokesay Castle, Shropshire 0181a
The South Tower - built shortly after the Solar block. Laurence may have built the additional tower so that he could leave the Solar block and north tower for his children as he and his wife, Agnes, had at least six. But it is likely that it was built to reflect his growing wealth and status.
The roof is now flat and made of lead covered by wooden slats. It once housed a small shed-like structure with a pointed wooden roof, perhaps for sentries during the Civil War. The battlements have several hinges and fastenings so that boards could be placed across the openings as protection. View to the south.
Stokesay Castle was built during the 1280s - 1290s by Laurence of Ludlow, a wool merchant who had become one of the richest men in England. It was to show that he had become a member of the landowning class rather than for military purposes - it could not have withstood a siege but was secure enough to ensure security.
