Busitalia FAST- SIMET 170 - Not in Service
This VDL Futura of Busitalia FAST - SIMET is seen parked at Turin's bus terminus, Italy, waiting to depart on a service later on that evening, presumably to Reggio Calabria or to the Eastern Coast of Calabria.
Busitalia FAST - SIMET was created in 2016-17 after Trenitalia's Busitalia brand acquired the historical SIMET company of Rossano Calabro (CS), in order to enter the long distance coaches and compete with rival and already well established bus companies.
This move had caused criticism among the citizens of the Ionian Coast of Calabria, who have been deprived of the Intercity Night Trains from Bologna, Milan, Rome and Turin since 2012, and the Ionian railway now operates only one return trip of Intercity between Reggio Calabria and Taranto and a few regional trains. This had created an opportunity for the long distance buses market and Trenitalia decided to create their own brand of bus services.
Nowadays, booking a train between Catanzaro, Crotone and Milan requires at least 3 changes of train, including rail replacements and i more expensive than a long distance coach.
