Riding the Rodelblitz

Gerd had talked me for years into joining him for a ride on the seasonal 'Rodelblitz' trains from Eisenach to Arnstadt and back by way of the Rennsteig summit at Oberhof.
Well, I made it at least once. Ten years ago on February 13, 2011. While the Mikado 41 1144 is hammering away in the grade a few kilometers from the start at Eisenach we hang at the open windows and take it all in.
And while Gerd is silently enjoying his umpteenth ride on the Rodelblitz I took his portrait. He is a veteran railroader starting out at the Deutsche Reichsbahn where I first met him in 1991 when he was red cap of the Freital-Potschappel station. He is still with the Deutsche Bahn. A funny guy and a good friend.
