Justice league: Overlords Ch 5 (read desc)
Hit and miss
What looks like a bolt of lightening streaks through the streets of Gotham. It winds and twists through the streets, the alleyways, until finally, it settles in the docks. Two figures have been following the bolt: The Amazon, and the Emerald knight. They have a mission. A mission from God. Well, the next best thing. The two figures descend from the sky and approach the bolt, now standing still, but crackling with electricity. The speedforce is a pathway to many abilities, some considered by many as unnatural. Superspeed, phasing, even time travel. Barry Allen, the Flash, knows all these powers well. He calls out to the Amazon and the knight. "This is the place. It's the closest match to the location Nygma gave us".
The Amazon nods and signals the Knight. They rise, before flipping in mid air, and diving into the ground. It shakes, as if an almighty force had struck it.
Cracks form in the ceiling of the base. Then, suddenly, they break open, like wounds, spilling dirt and rocks. The Flash is the first in the room. As always, Barry Allen likes to be the first. He circles the room before slamming on the breaks, sending powerful gust of wind whooshing around the room. The other two, Wonder woman and Green lantern descend, like gods, from the break in the ceiling. They land, their feet gracefully touching the floor, as if they are weightless. They're ready for a fight. The Amazon has looked forward to this. But she is left disappointed. The base is empty, deserted.
"Shit" the knight mutters under his breath. This is bad. He knows how the Amazon gets when facing any kind of disappointment. He takes a moment, deciding whether it is worth speaking, saying that no one is here. He knows that she is one to take out her anger on others. Although he wasn't there, he heard rumours about what she did to Hawkgirl. It is the Flash who is first to speak. "They're gone, took everything with them".
Wonder woman is angry. She has disappointed her lord, and if there is one thing Diana hates, it is failure. She rips her helmet of her head, flinging it to the floor. "Flash, search through that door" she snaps as she steps towards it, fists clenched. She grabs the mighty iron door, at least 6 inches thick, and rips it open, the metal wrenching and squealing as she does so. The Flash zooms through the doorway, or what's left of it.
Throughout all this, Green lantern remains silent. He has decided that the best course of action for him is to remain silent until he finds anything worth mentioning. So, he floats up, and begins scanning with his ring. He knows he'll find nothing, but he scans nonetheless. He floats around the room, his ring making feint blipping noises as it flicks through different modes. Thermal, X-ray, even geiger counter. Nothing emerges. The base has been abandoned for some time.
The Flash returns, racing into a chair and reclining. He has found nothing. There is no sign of hostiles, as he expected. "Nothing, looks like they've been gone for a while, I'd estimate about a week."
Wonder woman clenches her fist, fury burning in her heart. She has failed, and she does not tolerate failure, even her own. She slowly walks back across the room, stooping low to retrieve her helmet, hardly breaking pace. Anger and hatred burning within her, she ascends the steps, towards the doorway. Without warning or expectation, she slams her helmet covered fist into the doorframe, smashing through concrete with an almighty cracking sound. Nygma is a dead man.
